Drop-Stitch Air Mattress Construction
Support below. Comfort above.
Sailflux combines a drop-stitch air core with a detachable memory foam topper to separate two jobs: structural support below and cushioned comfort above.
This guide explains the construction described for our Queen 10-inch camping air mattress.
What is a drop-stitch air mattress?
A drop-stitch air mattress uses internal threads connecting the upper and lower surfaces of its air chamber. As the chamber inflates, those threads limit how far the surfaces can separate, helping the mattress retain its shape.
Construction, not a comfort layer. Drop-stitch describes the internal construction, not the comfort layer or the material of the outer chamber.
The Structure: Support Below, Comfort Above
Drop-stitch air core
The Sailflux Queen 10-inch mattress uses thousands of high-tension internal threads to support a flatter sleeping platform. Air provides adjustable support, while the internal structure helps control the shape of the inflated chamber.
Detachable memory foam topper
A detachable memory foam topper adds cushioning above the air core. The topper cushions the sleep surface, while the inflated core provides support.
Memory foam does not replace the need for correct inflation.
Why Polyether TPU?
The air chamber in this model uses Polyether TPU, or thermoplastic polyurethane. Material and internal construction are separate design choices.
TPU describes the chamber material. Drop-stitch describes how its upper and lower surfaces are connected.
Adjustable Support and Cordless Setup
Add or release air to adjust the feel of the mattress. This model includes a built-in, removable USB-C rechargeable pump, with inflation taking approximately 2–3 minutes and deflation taking approximately 3–4 minutes.
Setup time can vary with conditions and battery charge. Charge the pump before travelling and follow the product instructions for inflation and use.
Construction at a Glance
| Component | Role in the sleep system |
|---|---|
| Drop-stitch air core | Internal threads help control the inflated chamber's shape. |
| Polyether TPU chamber | Forms the inflatable chamber around the internal structure. |
| Detachable memory foam topper | Adds a cushioned sleep surface above the air core. |
| Removable rechargeable pump | Supports inflation, deflation, and convenient USB-C charging. |
Common Questions
Is drop-stitch the same as memory foam?
No. Drop-stitch is the internal construction of the inflatable core. Memory foam is a separate cushioning layer above it.
Does a drop-stitch air mattress feel like a solid foam mattress?
Not necessarily. Its feel depends on inflation, the comfort layer, and the sleeper. The Sailflux design combines adjustable air support with memory foam cushioning rather than relying on either layer alone.
Does every Sailflux product use this construction?
